October 22, 2009 Should we let the BNP speak?
The method of denying the BNP airtime is failing, as easily influenced voters see only the thin veneer of respectability under which the BNP’s true abhorrent racism lies. There is a thin layer of UKIP-esque policy on the BNP, and it is necessary to dig a little deeper to find the true racist, exclusive, and frankly horrifying statements. Whilst it is regrettable that Unite Against Fascism will be protesting outside the BBC as the fascists sit inside, only by engaging Griffin in debate can we show the British public his true colours. It will not be easy, as Griffin is shrewd and slippery, but it is of vital importance to all of us that the BNP’s rise is stopped.
It is a core belief of mine that the million or so people who have voted for the BNP did so not because they are racists who wish to see all non-white British people repatriated, but merely because they agree that immigration rules need to be changed and are not aware of the BNP’s extreme xenophobia. If Griffin’s true thoughts were known to all, I sincerely hope that his support would greatly decrease. Surely, for example, his voters do not agree with this: ‘I am well aware that the orthodox opinion is that six million Jews were gassed and cremated or turned into lamp shades. Orthodox opinion also once held that the earth is flat … I have reached the conclusion that the ‘extermination’ tale is a mixture of Allied wartime propaganda, extremely profitable lie and latter witch-hysteria.’
If indeed the BNP’s support stems from a lack of proper understanding of them by the electorate, then only through debate such as on Question Time can we rectify this.
